Tartar and plaque build-up mean bacterial colonies under the gum that are potential sources of local abscesses or can be released into the bloodstream create infection at sites distant to the mouth.   Kidney infections, heart infections and and liver infections can all potentially be caused by bacteria travelling in the blood stream of susceptible animals.  

Chewing raw bones can be good but it does also have its risks and can result in fracture of teeth which is a potential risk site for abscessation.   The safest way to keep your dog’s teeth clean is brushing or wiping.
